It was only three hours and 26 minutes into the new year before the City recorded its first homicide of the year.
Leonard Jones, a 35-year old father of four, is now dead after being gunned down at his apartment complex in Flour Bluff just before 3:30 a.m. on New Year's Day.
His alleged killer, 22-year old Patrick Todd, is now behind bars, after police had to call in the SWAT Team to get him to come out of his apartment.
The suspect eventually came out and surrendered peacefully.
Neighbors said Todd had been drinking and had already attacked one man. Later, he ended up getting a gun and allegedly shot and killed Jones.
Ashaiya Mills, the victims daughter, said she had gone over to her dad's to celebrate the New Year, but he eventually got into an argument with Todd and the shooting began.
"Wait for the court. Hope they give him life or something, because he killed my daddy," Mills said. "My daddy doesn't see me get to graduate, or nothing."
Inside of the Todd's apartment there was a huge knife hidden under the couch, and a two-by-four that had a drawing depicting the shooting death of someone. Police apparently did not take it with them after searching the apartment.
Residents said that the suspect was brought back to the apartments later in the day, but no one knows why he was brought back.
One neighbor said that someone had broken Todd's apartment window and had shot a hole through his front door. No one knows for sure how that happened, and police did not confirm whether or not Todd had been shot at before the deadly shooting of Jones.
