Suspected Drug, Immigrant Smuggler Arrested in Bailout Near Robstown

Nueces County deputies say a suspected drug and immigrant smuggler was arrested following a high-speed chase that ended in a bailout Thursday morning near Robstown.

The chase started just before 3:30 a.m. on Highway 77 near County Road 44. Deputies pulled over two sport utility vehicles and a handful of people jumped out of one vehicle, running into a nearby field.

Five suspected illegal immigrants were caught and six are still on the run.

In the other SUV, deputies say they found a suspected smuggler.

"Just by his story and how he was acting, and then when we ran his criminal history, it came back that he had a history of drug charges and transporting large amount of drugs and also illegals," Deputy Matt Caffey said.

There has been no word yet as to whether the six remaining illegal immigrants were caught.
