More Closure and Re-opening Notices due to Dolly

IMPORTANT CLOSURES DUE TO DOLLY:
---------------------------

The City of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department advises residents that because of the receding tides along the coast, all of the City’s beach access roads on Padre and Mustang Islands are reopening as of 3:30 p.m. today, Thursday, July 24, 2008.

The roads had been closed since Tuesday, as a result of high tides produced by Hurricane Dolly. Even though the closures are no longer necessary, officials with the City’s Beach Operations office advise citizens to be extremely cautious if they decide to go to the beach. There are still large pools of water standing on the beach in which cars could become stuck, and the recent high tides have deposited large amounts of seaweed on shore. And of course there is still the risk of dangerous rip currents.

Officials say crews will begin their regular beach maintenance operations on Friday, July 25, and they appreciate beachgoers’ patience while the debris is being cleaned up. Officials also say lifeguards will begin patrolling the beach by truck on Friday and will again start staffing the lifeguard stands on Saturday morning, July 26.

(Corpus Christi, TX)-Superintendent Joe Escoto announced that Padre Island National Seashore will open the Malaquite Beach Campground, Visitor Center, Bird Island Basin, and Entrance Station Friday, July 25, 2008 at 12:00 noon.

Park Rangers anticipate re-opening Gulf beach access on Friday, July 25, 2008 pending favorable tidal conditions; however, if poor beach conditions persist and are determined to be unsafe for staff and visitors, the closure may extend through the weekend.

In the event beaches are opened, beach travelers are encouraged to drive at posted speed limits and proceed with caution, as Hurricane Dolly has contributed to a significant amount of seaweed and debris washing ashore. Visitors are asked to call the Malaquite Visitor Center at 361-949-8068 for more information on beach conditions prior to traveling to the National Seashore.
