Two Arrests Made After Five-Month Old Tests Positive for Cocaine

A five-month old Mathis girl was taken to the hospital on Sunday after she reportedly ingested cocaine.

Since then, police arrested 31-year old Sofia Benavidez and her boyfriend, 31-year old Eddie Echavarria, on charges of injury to a child.

Mathis detectives said that Benavidez took the girl to Driscoll Children's Hospital on Sunday saying that the girl had suffered a fall; but doctors said bruising on the child's body did not match the mother's story.

Later, the child tested positive for cocaine. Police said Echavarria gave the child cocaine to make her stop crying.

As of now, the couple faces charges of injury to a child, but more charges are considered likely.
