Two Suspects Arrested in Shooting Homicide of Off-Duty Border Patrol Agent

Two men that authorities believe were responsible in the shooting of an off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent and his family Sunday night in Willacy County have been arrested, according to Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence.

According to Sheriff Spence, the Border Patrol agent Javier Vega, Jr., was fishing with relatives when the two men attempted to rob them, opening fire on Vega and his family. Vega was shot and killed, and his father was shot in the hip.

The two suspects are Mexican nationals identified as 30-year old Gustavo Tijerina of La Villa, Texas and 40-year old Ismael Hernandez of Weslaco, Texas. Although they were taken into custody Monday, the two men will not be officially booked into jail until Tuesday. However, Sheriff Spence said the suspects have since confessed to the crime and he is confident that the two will face charges of capital murder, attempted capital murder, four counts of aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence.
