Tx. Sinkhole's Growth Decreasing

KIIITV News

DAISETTA, Texas (AP) - Experts say a massive sinkhole in Liberty County appears to be slowing its spread.

The 900-feet-across gap in rural Daisetta has grown to at least 260 feet deep.

It's managed to swallow oil tanks and barrels, tires, telephone poles and several vehicles -- but so far no injuries.

Authorities say there are about 100 homes in the immediate area of the sinkhole.

Geologist Carl Norman says the sinkhole is still growing, but has substantially slowed and there's been no more dramatic increase in its size.

Norman plans to measure the change of ground elevation around the sinkhole over the next few days to try to determine whether it's stabilized.

The sinkhole was first noticed on Wednesday in an area known to have salt domes.

Daisetta is a town of about 1,000, located 60 miles northeast of Houston.
