Jury Begins Deliberation for Man Blamed for Killing 2 Deputies

KIIITV News

ATHENS, Texas (AP) - A jury in East Texas has begun considering the fate of a man blamed for the 2007 shooting deaths of two deputies.

Jurors on Friday began deliberations in the capital murder trial of 47-year-old Randall Wayne Mays.

The shootout, last May 17 near Payne Springs, left two Henderson County sheriff's deputies dead and a third injured.

Deputies Paul Steven Habelt and Tony Price Ogburn were shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call at the Mays house.

Mays, who did not testify, is on trial over the killing of Ogburn. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Payne Springs is about 50 miles southeast of Dallas.
