Escaped Huntsville Prisoner Caught

KIIITV News

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - An inmate who fled from his from his job as grounds keeper outside a Huntsville area prison, via bicycle, is back in custody.

Authorities say 55 year old convicted burglar and robber Michael McCumber was caught last night about five hours after he fled.

McCumber was riding a stolen bicycle along Interstate 45 in Madison County, about 15 miles north of the Wynne Unit.

McCumber was picked up by Madison County sheriff's deputies. At some point, he ditched his white prison uniform, for a black shirt and khaki pants.

He'll now face felony escape charges.

McCumber had several convictions as long ago as 1987 from Bexar County.

Prison officials say he had good disciplinary record and his parole eligibility for next June made him a candidate for the trustee job.
