WACO, Texas (AP) - An open school gym cabinet with children
playing inside toppled on a 5-year-old girl at a Waco middle
school, killing the girl.

The incident happened around midday Wednesday at G.L. Wiley
Middle School. Waco school district official Dale Caffey says two
or three children, including 5-year-old Princanna Strain, climbed
into the cabinet to pursue a lizard when the cabinet toppled on
Princanna.

No other students were injured. The girl was taken to Hillcrest
Baptist Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:05 p.m.

The child was a J.H. Hines Elementary School student, but Hines
students and staff are relocated to Wiley while a new Hines complex
is under construction.

Counselors are at Wiley to console the Hines students, staff and
faculty.

Why is blame the first thing brought up? I send my deepest sympathy to the family and friends who lost this beautiful angel. My heart and prayers go out to them for their loss.

what type of cabinet is this? I don't think it's not fair to blame the teacher right away just on the fact that children are fast. I go nuts just watching my own 2 children. Also, teaching your children self control is great, but keep in mind, these are small childres.I think this is more along the lines of a safety hazard. I'm sure there are some kind of regulations on equiptment like this. This means the school should held responsible as far as adhering to safety guidelines,if this is the case

Teachers aren't paid to watch children, they are paid to educate them. They're not baby sitters. The teacher should've been watching them yes, but the story reported doesn't provide any details as to what what time of day this occured if it was before or after school, or if these students were even in the right place at the time.

How about this? Parents, lets teach our kids to have self control! Everyone likes to blame others for what we fail to teach our kids.

Sad Sad. My guess is the teachers didn't think anything of it. Kids play everywhere. Why was the cabinet not securely fastened to the wall? I have cabinets in my shop fastened to the wall specifically for this reason. Safety first.

it's not 'bout student teacher ratio; when will the excuses for negligence stop? plus, teachers "watching" kids on the playground or cafeteria or hallways or classrooms ain't always so

Ive seen times when three or four teachers are "watching" kids at recess, but their really just talking and not paying a bit of attention to the kids.

it's really sad that this had to happen to such a young little girl...but there mistakes that should of never happened, where was the teacher at during this time, the little girls should of never been in the cabinet in the first place...so it leaves you wondering about the student teach ratio...
