DALLAS (AP) - The U.S. Education Department confirmed Thursday
that it has fined Tarleton State University $137,500 for failing to
accurately report campus crime statistics.

University spokeswoman Liza Benedict says Tarleton State would
appeal the fine.

Federal law requires colleges and universities to timely
disclose information about campus crime and security policies. The
federal inquiry came in the wake of stories in the Tarleton State
campus newspaper, The J-TAC.

Tarleton State is in Stephenville, about 95 miles southwest of
Dallas.
