AUSTIN (AP) - The University of Texas in October will unveil a statue of late civil rights leader Cesar Chavez.

Chavez, who organized farm worker protests, will be the first Hispanic with a statue on the Austin campus.

Chavez died in 1993.

U-T also is moving forward with plans for a statue honoring the late Barbara Jordan of Houston.

Jordan was the first black woman from the South to serve in Congress.

The Jordan statue was supposed to be unveiled this spring, but the project was delayed after campus leaders rejected the design that had been chosen.

A committee coordinated by the Texas Commission on the Arts selected four semi-finalists from a pool of 83 applicants.

Four miniature versions of their proposed statues will be unveiled on Thursday and will remain on display for public comment through May first.
