SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) - About 100 people have sought preventive treatment after contact with a 22-year-old San Angelo man who died after contracting bacterial meningitis.

Lance Schkade died Tuesday. He was a 2003 graduate of Grape Creek High School and attended the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and Angelo State University.

Public health officials say anyone who had close contact with him since April Second should contact their doctor, the health department or a hospital emergency room.

The disease spreads through close contact. Its symptoms are described as flu-like with high fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms of bacterial meningitis usually occur about two to four days after contact, but may extend into ten days later.
