Upcoming Fundraisers to Benefit Meals On Wheels Program

The Meals On Wheels program in Corpus Christi is in major demand these days. It offers meals to homebound seniors. In fact, there are over 160 seniors on a waiting list to join.

"We've had people on the waiting list for several months. Over three months. These are people that are ill," said Elsa Munoz of the City's Parks and Recreation Department. "They have some sort of disability that prevents them from preparing their own meal. So they are in dire need of a well-balanced, hot, nutritious lunch to be delivered to them. These meals are aimed at keeping them healthier longer, so that they are able to maintain independence and stay in their home as long as possible."

"I don't have strength to do things, and these meals help me a lot," said Romana Castillo, who has been helped by Meals On Wheels. "There's a lot of other people that are worse than me, and this helps them too."

Volunteers with Inside Coastal Bend Magazine and organizers with the Harvest Moon Masquerade helped hand out meals Friday afternoon. Both groups will be hosting fundraisers for Meals On Wheels in hopes of getting more people off that waiting list.

The first benefit is happening Wednesday at Katz 21. Inside Coastal Bend will be hosting its monthly mixer there, with proceeds going to Meals On Wheels.

Then, on Saturday, Oct. 5, also at Katz 21, the Harvest Moon Masquerade will be taking place. The event is free and will feature a silent auction, including sports memorabilia and raffle baskets.
