Corpus Christi (Kiii Sports) - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team fell short to Texas – Pan American, 49-45, Wednesday night at the American Bank Center. Ashley Darley led all scorers with 14 points and tied her season-high of seven rebounds but the Islanders shot just 24.6 percent and dropped their second game of the season to the Broncs.
In a game that featured nine ties and seven lead changes, the Islanders (0-7) notched the lead at the 10:22 mark of the second half but were unable to hold it as the Broncs (3-5) went on a 6-0 run and never trailed again. Joyea Marshall paced UTPA with 12 points including 6-of-8 from behind the arc and KayLynn Boyd tallied 11 points. Cassandra Moody led the glass with a game-high 10 boards to help the Broncs out rebound the Islanders 39-38.
Darley tallied her fifth double-figure scoring game this season while Jessica Jammer chipped in eight points and Taryn Gregory tallied a game-high six steals.
Darley opened the game with a layup before the two teams traded baskets. The Broncs took the lead at the 17:47 mark with a layup and a free throw to take a 5-4 lead. After a Darley miss, Jammer nailed the put back to pull the Islanders within one. The Broncs built a five-point cushion on a 6-0 run. The Islanders answered with a 5-0 run of their run with free throws by Blount and Darley while Jammer followed with a dish inside to Plummer for a jumper to knot the score at 11-11 with 11:40 to play in the half.
After a Bronc three pointer the Islanders took a 17-14 lead with 6:25 to play with back-to-back buckets and a free throw by Darley. UTPA knotted the score at 17 after a layup and free throw but the Islanders pulled back ahead by two after a Jammer jumper. However, the Broncs put together a 4-0 run to end the half with a 21-19 lead.
The first half featured six ties and five lead changes. Darley led all scorers at the half with 10, including 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Jammer chipped in four points and Gregory added three steals. The Broncs were led by Marshall's five points and Johnondra Patterson's six rebounds. UTPA shot 50 percent in the first half compared to the Islanders' 25 percent and out rebounded the Islanders 17-13.
Out of the half, Blount sank two free throws to even the score at 21, but the Broncs hit a free throw and their second trey of the game to push ahead by four with 18:44 to play. The Islanders responded though with an 8-0 run to take a 29-25 lead with 13:08 to play. During the run, Darley added two baskets and Verne'qua Taylor chipped in a three-point play, while Gregory added a free throw. UTPA followed with consecutive buckets to even it at 29-29 with 11:45 to play.
Marquesha Anderson-Sparks gave the Islanders' a 31-29 lead with 10:22 to play, but the Broncs put together a 6-0 run to extend the lead to four with 7:48 to play. Anderson-Sparks chipped in two free throws but back-to-back baskets by Patterson pushed the Broncs' lead to five. After a six-minute dry spell without a field goal, Alisa Roberts hit a jumper to pull the Islanders within three with 3:53 to play.
The two teams traded buckets before Moody hit consecutive layups to extend the Broncs' lead to seven. Roberts followed with a jumper and two free throws before Boyd added two from the charity stripe. With 24.4 seconds remaining, Jammer hit a layup to cut it with three but the Islanders were forced to foul with 16 seconds remaining. After a UTPA free throw, Jammer followed with another layup but the Broncs sank two more from the charity stripe and Gregory missed a three pointer as time expired.
The Islanders will wrap up the November schedule Friday when they travel to Austin to take on No.18-ranked Texas at 11 a.m.
