UT Students Construct Viewing Platform at Botanical Gardens

There's a new addition to the South Texas Botanical Gardens, courtesy of students from the University of Texas.

A multi-functional viewing platform was unveiled on Monday. Twelve UT architecture students spent the last three months conceiving and constructing the structure. The platform includes shaded seating areas, wind blockers and steps to the Oso Creek marsh flats.

"We're all architecture students, so we're all very strong-willed and have a lot of strong ideas, so it was a really a collaborative effort between all 11 of us to bring together the space," UT student Jon Handzo said. "The concept really came out of coming down to the site and seeing the condition, and trying to express those conditions through the wall and this platform as well."

Most of the construction took place in Austin. The parts were than shipped over here after Thanksgiving, and the assembling phase took a little over week to complete.
