Vandals Shatter 58 Windows at Los Encinos Elementary

An overnight act of vandalism left more than $3,000 in damage at a Corpus Christi Independent School District elementary school, after more than 50 windows were shattered.

However, it was all caught on video surveillance, and hopes are that the culprits will be caught.

It took the better part of the day to replace all the broken windows at Los Encinos Elementary, on the 1800 block of Frio Street. A total of 58 windows were shattered in all. It was the work of two vandals who police say were teens just out to cause damage.

Principal Christine Sierra and CCISD Police Chief Kirby Warnke reviewed the 15 minutes or so of surveillance video.

"It's disappointing to know that someone would come to our campus to destroy school property," Sierra said.

The destruction happened around 2 a.m. The video shows the two vandals casually walking through the open air hallways. One of them is seen picking up a rock and throwing it through a window.

"This is a community school, so any damage that happens to this school happens to the community as well," Warnke said.

Aside from the cost of the damage, the inconvenience to teachers and students is immeasurable.

"Certain classrooms had to be moved to other areas of the school, shutting down the cafeteria during the lunchtime," Sierra said. "And so certainly the flexibility of our staff members was very much appreciated."

In the meantime, CCISD police are asking for your help.

"Well, we'd like to know, you got some of our surveillance video, if they can be identified we need to know that," Warnke said.

So if anyone has information regarding this incident, please call Crime Stoppers at 361-888-8477.
