Wanted Man Injures Officer While Resisting Arrest Sunday Morning

A 39-year old man wanted on four arrest warrants was taken into custody early Sunday morning, but not after putting up a fight and injuring a Corpus Christi police officer.

It was around 3:30 a.m. Sunday when officers went to a home in the 2400 block of Cleo Street in search of 39-year old Rolando Avalos. They spotted him in a back bedroom through a window and made entry into the home. That's when Avalos tried to escape through a window.

Two officers got into a struggle on the ground with Avalos as he attempted to flee. Once they gained control of the suspect and began escorting him back to a police cruiser, Avalos broke free and led police on a short chase.

A female officer caught up with Avalos and there was yet another struggle, this time resulting in the officer falling to the ground and hitting her head on the pavement. The suspect then began kicking the officer in the back and her sides. Other officers arrived and were able to take Avalos into custody.

Avalos was arrested and charged with the four original warrants, as well as evading arrest on foot, resisting arrest and assault on a peace officer.

EMS crews from the Corpus Christi Fire Department were called out to treat the injured police officer.
