Water Safety Expert Testifies in Laura Day Trial

According to a water safety expert who testified for the state on Tuesday, there was no way Laura Day could have spotted six-year old Taylor Syring in trouble on the day he drowned on Padre Island.

Andrea Zaferes, a water safety expert who lectures on watery death investigations, testified that it makes no sense what Day said, saying that, "there's no way she could have seen Taylor from the beach with conditions as were present that day."

Zaferes said National Weather Service records indicate that, on Oct. 5, 2012, waves would have made it impossible to see someone at the surface, adding that "the waves would have covered Taylor."

Using a mannequin, the exact weight and height of Syring, Zaferes demonstrated to jurors how high the waves would have been 150 feet out in the surf, as Day told investigators they were.

The state rested, and the defense is expected to present only two witnesses. Closing statements could come as early as Wednesday.
