There are only 500 whooping cranes in the world, and 300 of them can be found right here in the Coastal Bend.
The Whooping Crane Festival has kicked off in Port Aransas this weekend.
From whooping crane tours to bird expert seminars and a trade show, the festival has several festivities for everyone to enjoy.
The 300 whooping cranes in the area is the last natural migrating flock left in the world, they are highly endangered species.
The flock migrates to the Aransas Wildlife Refuge from Oct. to March, their natural nesting grounds are in Canada Wood Buffalo National Park in the Spring and Summer.
