Woman Indicted in Drowning Death of a Child Pleads Not Guilty

Laura Day, 47, who was indicted for capital murder in the drowning of her six-year old stepson, was arraigned at the Nueces County Courthouse Tuesday and pled not guilty.

In October of 2012, Day had admitted to police investigators that she allowed six-year old Taylor Syring to remove his life vest at the beach. Moments later, she saw him face down in the water near Bob Hall Pier.

Day said she tried to resuscitate him and then drove him to Bay Area Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

She was originally charged with child endangerment and injury to a child, but last Thursday, a grand jury indicted Day on charges of capital murder. The next day, it was announced that she had hired a team of lawyers to handle her case, including Gabi Canales, Les Cassidy and David Stith.
