Women's Shelter Organizes Political Forum on Domestic Violence

Domestic violence was the topic of discussion at a political forum organized, appropriately enough, by the local Women's Shelter.

The Coastal Bend Coordinated Community Response Coalition hosted the forum at the Del Mar Center for Economic Development.

Most of the candidates up for re-election or vying for a seat attended the forum, where they were presented with statistics on domestic violence, from the number of cases reported each year in Nueces County to the number of deaths caused by family violence.

Organizers of the forum said they wanted to send a message to those vying for support.

"We hold them accountable for what they say in that room today," said Susan Holly Lowe of the Women's Shelter. "It cannot be just a political promise. It has to be action."

Lowe said the message they want the candidates to know and understand is that domestic violence is becoming an epidemic in our area, and that help from political leaders is desperately needed.
