Battle of the Wildcats 2016 Preview

PORTLAND, TX (KIII SPORTS) - The Battle of the Wildcats features the Battle of the Big Cats. Two of the state's best coaches, Phil Danaher who is six wins shy of sole possession of the Texas high school football wins record, and three time state champion Rick Rhoades.

"What he's done with that program over the last 30 years have been unbelievable," Rhoades said of Danaher.

"That's a model for us. Hopefully we can get this program to the same situation Calallen's in."

"(Rhoades is) a very knowledgeable man. Good man, good Christian man. We've worked well together. It's trhe first time we've ever played against each other so it should be interesting," Danaher said.

Calallen has leaned on a strong defense to get out to a 4-1 start. They only gave up 28 yards last week against T-M.

"Growing up, Calallen's always had a bunch of pride in their defense. That's what's gotten us into the playoffs and deep in the playoffs every single year."

G-P has hit its stride, averaging 50 points per game in two straight wins.

"What I learned about our team is what I learned about G-P kids before I got here. They never quit. They keep playing. I was very, very proud of them."

In last year's Battle of the Wildcats, Calallen came away with a big win 48-7. Two years ago, the last time the game was played in Portland as it will be this week, G-P rallied to get a 27-24 win.

"Being in the trenches, having all my friends bloodied up. Next day, we can't move, can't get up," Brenden Teague remembered his sophomore year win.

"I think we're a better team than we were last year," Calallen senior receiver Austin Wisehart said.

"You never want to graduate with a loss, especially in a rivalry game."

G-P leads the all time series 32-29-3. Kickoff is Friday at 7:30pm at Ray Adkins Wildcat Stadium in Portland.
