Calallen Using Summer to Prepare For New Players, Coaches

The Calallen Wildcats were predicted to win the new nine-team mega-district 30-5A by Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, which normally wouldn't be surprising for any Phil Danaher-coached team.

This year's version of the 'Cats will be vastly inexperienced however as Calallen returns just four starters total on both sides of the ball, including no full-time starters on defense. Coach Danaher's team will have to contend with the likes of rivals Flour Bluff and Alice among others, neither of which have been in the 'Cats' district the last two years.

Danaher says he hopes to get his new starters ready in the form of a tough scrimmage with 5A state runner-up Pearland and then non-district games at Mercedes and at Kerrville Tivy. To add to the 'Cats' troubles, the bye week doesn't come until the end of the regular season during Week 11, so Calallen will have to fun the district gauntlet before getting a pre-playoff breather.
