Islanders Open Practice with Season a Month Away

The Islander men and women are now in the first week of practice with the season just over a month away.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII SPORTS) - The Islander men's basketball team is coming off a great run in the Southland Conference last year that saw Willis Wilson's team reach the conference championship game.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi brings back a majority of that roster including preseason first team All-Southland Conference Rashawn Thomas, a senior many consider the best player in the conference this year.

Thomas had some issues on and off the court midway through last season, but seemed to get it together for the islanders' strecth run. The islanders' big man says this offseason including a basketball trip to New Zealand helped him focus on what needs to be done to help be the leader he's expected to be.

The Islander women are also back in action this week, but are coming off a much different season than the men. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took a step back last season: going 9-20 and just 6-12 in conference play.

Coach Royce Chadwick has a mix of eight returners and eight newcomers, a roster he hopes can gel together by the time conference play rolls around.
