Javelina Men Stay Unbeaten With 60-52 Win

Kingsville (Kiii Sports) - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team put on a defensive exhibition Tuesday night in the first half against St. Edward's and held on to pick up its second-straight win 60-52 on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

In the first half, Kingsville (2-1) held the visiting Hilltoppers (3-3) to a 12.5% shooting from the floor as St. Edward's hit 4-of-32 shots. The Javelinas led 28-15 at the intermission,

The Hilltoppers warmed up late in the final half to make a late run at the hosts hitting 12-of-31 in the second half. They finished 25.4% from the floor.
Kingsville, which led by as many as 13 in the first half, built an 18-point lead in the second half with eight minutes remaining on a put back by Adam Mughmaw. The Javelinas finished 21-of-45 from the floor.

The Toppers began to chip away moments later as James Stukes netted five-straight points including a three-point basket with 6:35 left to make it 49-36.
Point guard Rashad Basey, who led the Javelinas in scoring for the third time in as many games, picked up an offensive foul with 6:09 left and was forced to the bench.  He returned with 3:12 to go.
In the time Basey was on the bench, the visitors cut their deficit from 13 to seven, 53-46, on a Shimeek Johnson trey.
St. Edward's Tyler Foster drained a three-point basket to make it 54-51 with 2:13 left.
Kingsville would not let the visitors get closer.

After struggling with free throws in the season opening loss to Texas A&M International, Kingsville was 4-of-4 in the final 72 seconds. Mughmaw, who had a season-high 11 points to go with 10 boards for his first double-double, hit two as did Dwight Taylor. The Javelinas finished 16-of-21 from the line in the game. St. Edward's was 13-of-26 from the stripe.
Basey led the Javelinas in scoring with 14 points – all 14 came in the final half. Marshall Bonds matched Mughmaw's 11 points. Bonds had seven of his points in the first half to lead the Hoggies, while Jamahl Brown added six in the first 20 minutes. 

Kingsville dominated the paint in the win outscoring St. Edward's 32-12. The Javelinas finished with a season-high 48 rebounds. Daymon Warren came off the bench to grab 11 boards in just 15 minutes of play. Johnson led the visitors with 15 points.

The Javelinas remain at home this weekend as they host the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Thanksgiving Classic. The Hoggies are joined in the tournament by Bacone, Cameron and McMurry. Kingsville opens Friday at 4 p.m. against Bacone, while facing McMurry on Saturday at 4 p.m. The women play each day at 1:30.
