KINGSVILLE (Javelin Athletics) - After winning the home opener, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team fell in two games to Oklahoma Christian, 4-3 and 12-3.
Kingsville falls to 8-3 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 3-3.
In the opening game, the Javelinas scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 1-1 tie only to watch the Eagles score a pair of runs in the top of the tenth to snap the Javelinas eight-game winning streak.
Evan Draper led the inning off with a single and came around to score on a double by Jordan Lopez off the Javelinas' Jeremy Flores (0-1). Lopez crossed the plate on a single by Caleb Price following a Javelina error for a 4-2 lead.
The Javelinas tried to rally in the bottom of the tenth. Dustin Aguilar, who singled, crossed the plate on a balk by Chris Burgess (1-0), who was the eventual winner.
Kingsville broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth, Chris Ballou drove in the go ahead run. Ben Villafuerte, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, went to second on a one-out hit to left. He came around to cross the plate on Ballou's single to left.
The Javelinas tried to continue the inning loading the bases with two outs as Matt Perez was hit by a pitch. Daniel Sawyer relieved Zach Loomis for the Eagles and sent Clint Wallace down swinging to end the inning. The lead was short lived as Oklahoma Christian knotted the score at two with a run in the top of the ninth. With two away, Markus Carr singled down the left field line driving in pinch runner Caleb Price. Kingsville stranded nine batters in the game.
After the Eagles scored an unearned run in the top of the second, Kingsville tied the game in the bottom of the third. With two away, the Javelinas strung together three straight singles. The third by Taska drove in Villafuerte.
During the second game, both teams were scoreless through the top of the fifth until Kingsville got the bats going on a two-out rally started with a Cash Barker single. Barker stole second, his fourth stolen base of the season. Dustin Aguilar doubled down the left field line to drive in Barker. Joe Tallerine hit an infield single to score Aguilar, making it 2-0.
Oklahoma Christian immediately responded in the sixth and eighth innings, scoring 12 runs off 12 hits and one error. Kingsville tried to rally off two outs again in the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Eagles held the Javelinas off.
Brock Werdel (1-1) earned his first win of the season with the Eagles. Cody Williams (0-1) earned his first loss as a Javelina.
Kingsville returns to the field Friday when they travel to Victoria for a twi-night doubleheader against University of Houston-Victoria starting at 3 p.m. The second game will follow 30 minutes after the first game ends. The Javelinas return home Saturday for another doubleheader against Houston-Victoria starting at 3 p.m.
