Javelinas Upset #4 Abilene Christian

Abilene – The sixth seeded Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas upset the
number one seed and fourth ranked Abilene Christian Wildcats on their
home field 5-3 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Postseason
Tournament.
The Hogs, now 28-28, will take on Southeastern Oklahoma Sunday at
3:00 p.m.
Sophomore Mario Gonzalez (Premont), pitching in his first game since
March 21st while recovering from a sore elbow, worked the final 2 1/3
innings, allowing only one hit and retiring six of the seven batters he
faced to earn the win and improve to 5-2.
Sam Strickland worked the first 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on
10 hits.
Senior catcher Joe Hamon went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs
scored. Will Alexander and Chase Myrick each had two hits as the
Javelinas out-hit the Wildcats 13-11.
ACU led 1-0 after two innings, but the Javelinas tied the game with a
run in the third on a two-out, run scoring double by Owen Weaver.
The Javelinas took the lead in the fifth on a two-out single by Hamon.
ACU evened things at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but
the Hogs got it right back with a run in the top of the seventh when
Erik Gomez scored on a Wildcat error.
ACU answered again with a run in the bottom of the seven to tie the
game at 3-3. With the go-ahead run on second and the score already
tied, Gonzalez entered the game and induced J.J. Pacheco into a fly out
to end the threat.
The Hogs grabbed the lead for good with a single run in the eighth on
a run-scoring single by Myrick.
An insurance run in the ninth on a run-scoring single by Hamon.
Gonzalez retired the Wildcats in order in the eighth, allowed a
leadoff single to Jordan Schmitt, but got Allen Smith to hit into a
double play and retired William Uechi on a ground out to end the game.
