Hogs Win Elimination Game In The 12th Inning

Abilene – Seniors Taylor Everett and Owen Weaver delivered run scoring singles in the 12th inning and sophomore Mario Gonzalez (Premont) won his second game of the Lone Star Conference Tournament as the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas stayed alive by beating Cameron 7-4 in 12 innings.

A&M-Kingsville will face the lone unbeaten team left in the tournament, Central Oklahoma at 7:00 p.m. tonight.

Weaver finished 3-for-6 with two RBI while Everett and Hamon all had two hits and an RBI.

Gonzalez, who entered the tournament not having pitched since March 21st , allowed only two hits over four innings while striking out two and walking none. He entered the game in the seventh inning with the score tied at 4-4 and the trying run on second with one out. He retired the final two hitters to end the threat and the Aggies never got a runner past first base through the 11th inning.

Tim Jones came on in the bottom of the 12th and allowed a walk, but did not allow a hit and earned the save.

Gonzalez is now 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference Tournament over the past two years with all three wins coming in relief. In the 2008 tournament he has allowed no runs on just three hits and has not allowed a walk through seven innings.

The Javelinas jumped out to a 4-0 lead and did score a run and only had one hit from the fourth through the 11th innings before putting together their rally.

In fact, the Hogs did not have a hit from the sixth through the 11th innings and had only two base runners.

Wiley Crowson started the rally in the 12th with a single to center. James Brown (Corpus Christi King) then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Crowson to second. Erik Gomez was hit by a pitch and Everett delivered a run-scoring single to drive in Crowson. Everett rounded first and headed to second, drew a throw from Cameron catcher Kyle Nyhart and Gomez scored from third, beating the throw back home. Will Mettlach (McAllen) followed with a walked and Joe Hamon singled. Weaver then singled to drive in a run to make it 7-4.

Jones allowed a two out walk, but got a fielder’s choice ground out to end the game.

The Hogs got a run in the second when Robert Cox (Calallen) walked, stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Wiley Crowson and scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Taylor Everett led off the inning with a single and Gil Perez (Odem) walked to give the Hogs two runners on with no outs. Joe Hamon singled to drive in Everett and Owen Weaver singled to drive in Perez. Chase Myrick then doubled to drive in Hamon and give the Hogs a 4-0 lead.

Cameron got two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game, eventually leading to extra innings.
