Islander Golf Finishes 3rd

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women’s golf team placed third Tuesday at the Elkin Lakes Golf Classic which was shortened to two rounds due to wet weather.

The Islanders carded a 308 in the second round which was completed early Tuesday morning. They opened the tournament with a 298 which is tied for the third-lowest score in school history. The third round was cancelled by rain.

With the 308 in the second round, A&M-Corpus Christi finished the two-round event with a 606 and finished two shots behind the host Bearkats for second. SHSU had back-to-back rounds of 302 to finish at 604. Central Arkansas won the tournament with a 576 to win by 28 strokes after rounds of 285 and 291. The Islanders finished 13 shots ahead of fourth-place McNeese State.

Individually, Ashley Watkins led the Islanders with two round score of 150 to tie for eighth. She carded a 71 in the second round matching the best round of her Islander career after opening with a 79 to finish eighth with a 150. Ryann White finished tied for tenth with a 152 (73-79), while Courtney Peeler was one shot back tied for 12 with at 153 (74-79). Cecilia Jeon, who opened with a 72 on Monday, placed 20th with a 156 after a second round 84. Chelsey Watkins cut eight shots off her first round score firing a 79 in round two to finish at 166.

The Islanders close out their fall schedule at the Pat Bradley Invitational in Ft. Myers, Fla. on Oct. 26-27.
