Texas A&M-CC Softball Swept by HBU in DH

The Huskies scored three runs in the 12th inning to knock off the Islanders 6-3 in Game 1 of a doubleheader, and won 6-0 in Game 2.

CORPUS CHRISTI (ISLANDER ATHLETICS) - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team and Houston Baptist needed a combined 19 innings to complete Friday's doubleheader at Chapman Field, playing 12 frames in the series opener.

The Huskies (15-22, 6-14) edged the Islanders (8-30, 2-15) 6-4 with three runs in the top of the 12th in the first game, before taking the series in game two with a 6-0 victory.

GAME 1
After scoring two runs through the opening nine innings, the two ball clubs put up eight combined runs over the final three frames.

Islanders starting pitcher Liz Carter (7-15) came out dealing in the opener, facing the minimum through four. The Austin native struck out 11 on the afternoon, bringing her within three of 500 career punchouts. Carter scattered nine hits and allowed just a pair of earned runs with two walks.

Candice Hadd opened her 3-for-5 performance in the third with a single up the middle. After stealing third two batters later, Hadd scored when Savannah Sandoval hit a slow dribbler to short.

The Huskies leveled the score in the sixth when Kassie James singled to plate Kay Schroeder from second.

Corpus Christi put offensive pressure on HBU, before hitting into a pair of double plays in the sixth and seventh. Carter and the Islanders' defense denied the Huskies with runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth, before turning a double play to end the ninth.

As the teams entered the 10th and the automatic runner placed on second base, the game turned to small ball, as the two clubs laid down sacrifice bunts to open the next three innings.

Every time Houston Baptist took the lead in top half of the inning, the Islanders responded with runs to even the score. Carter singled to right in the 10th to bring in Aspen Auger. In the 11th, Sandoval tallied her second RBI of the afternoon on a bunt down to let Hadd score from third.

Opening the 12th, Brooke Bushman scored from second for the Huskies, as the Islanders missed the throw to first on Amber Lotz's sac bunt. HBU totaled three runs on two hits and two errors to create enough space for the win.

Corpus Christi pulled one back on a Hadd RBI single up the middle.

Emily Murphy (7-13) went the distance for the Huskies, striking out one, while surrendering 10 hits and four runs, one earned.

Mackinzee Griebel and Carter went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 at the plate, respectively, as the Blue and Green outhit the Huskies 10-9

GAME 2
Houston Baptist pitcher Stephanie Buenrostro (6-5) held the Islanders' bats at bay in the second game. The righty tossed a four-hit shutout behind a pair of strikeouts and one walk.

Offensively, HBU took the lead in the second when Demi Janak doubled down the left field line for an RBI. The Huskies added a trio of runs in the fifth, including a two on a throwing error by the Blue and Green. Libby Brown and Heidi Jaquez tallied RBI doubles to extend the lead in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Islanders starting pitcher Kandace Johnson (1-15) fell on the wrong side of three defensive miscues by the defense, as the Atascocita native allowed just two earned runs on nine hits and three walks.
