CORPUS CHRISTI (JAVELINA ATHLETICS) - Texas A&M University-Kingsville (10-17) closed the book on its inaugural season with a bang, defeating Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (1-16), 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Dugan Stadium. In the win, Haley Hutchinson and Kadi Shipman took flight No. 5, 21-16, 21-13, and Kat Evans and Maelee Sowa won No. 4, 21-13, 21-14, to put TAMUK ahead 2-0.
In just their second match as a tandem, Gabby Atchley and Kyra Henderson picked up a W in No. 3, 21-15, 21-8 to clinch the victory. For good measure, Madison Brabham and Kelby Sprinkles did the same in No. 2, 21-14, 21-16. Texas A&M-Kingsville began the day with a hard fought 5-0 loss to No. 14 TCU (18-10).
Against the Horned Frogs, Evans and Sowa took the opening set at No. 4, 22-20, and nearly swept the match with a close second set. However, the Horned Frogs were able to secure a 23-21 win to tie the match and ultimately, took the third set 15-10.
Taliah Phipps and Paige Lanam overcame a 21-16 defeat in the opening set of the exhibition to take set No. 2 21-19 and the match 17-15.
Playing at No. 3 for the first time this season, Atchley and Henderson jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 21-19 win. After falling in the second set, a back and forth went in favor of TCU, who squeaked out a 21-19 win in the tiebreaker to take flight No. 3, 19-21, 21-13, 21-19.
