TAMU-K Baseball Completes Sweep of Cameron up in Oklahoma

LAWTON, OK (Javelina Athletics) - Texas A&M-Kingsville senior Taylor Taska continued his strong play Saturday as he homered for the second-straight day and knocked in three more RBI as the Javelinas closed out their three-game set at Cameron with a 9-4 win.

With the victory, the Javelinas moved to 27-13 on the season and are 18-8 in the Lone Star Conference. Cameron falls to 12-23 on the season and is 7-17 in the league. Kingsville swept all seven games from the Aggies

Taska finished the weekend with a .643 average as his average climbed from .307 entering the weekend to .348. The senior, who missed several games with injury, homered twice on the weekend including the finale and drove in 10 RBI in the series with three more on Saturday. He entered the weekend with 18 RBI and three home runs and now has 28 and five, respectively.

Kingsville never trailed in the finale as the Hoggies plated two runs in the top of the first. Derrick Walls led off the game with a walk and scored from first on a double to center by Miles Holcomb. Holcomb, who advanced to third on a throw home, scored on a sacrifice fly by Taska.

After Harold Cannon homered for the Aggies in the bottom of the second, Kingsville scored three unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Blake Johnson reached on an infield error and went to second a sacrifice bunt by James Black. Johnson scored on a double by Justin Lee.

Kingsville benefitted from a pair of errors in the top of the fifth to build a 5-1 lead. Walls reached on a bunt single to start the inning and went to second as Holcomb reached on an error. With one away, Brian Frazier was hit by a pitch loading the bases. With two away, Walls and Holcomb crossed the plate on an error.

The Aggies pulled to within two at 5-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Javelinas would score a single run in the seventh and three in the eighth.

After a solo home run in the seventh by Taska, Black and Lee each hit solo home runs in the eighth. Dustin Aguilar scored the final run of the eighth reaching on an error and scoring on a single by Taska.

Matt Rhodes started the game going 3-2/3 innings. He allowed one run on five hits and five walks. He finished with three strikeouts. Cody Williams pitched the final 5-1/3 innings in relief. Williams moved to 4-5 as he permitted three runs on six hits. He had two strikeouts and walked one.

Drew Reidt fell to 4-6 as he was credited with eight runs on eight hits with five runs earned. He had fanned six. Tobin Mateychick allowed a run 1-2/3 innings.

Taska had three of Kingsville's nine hits, while Lee had two including the first homer of his Hoggie career. Walls and Holcomb each scored twice. CU had 11 hits led by Matt Nilmeyer with three hits.

The Javelinas are off until hosting Eastern New Mexico next Friday and Saturday in a 3-game series at Nolan Ryan Field.
