CHEROKEE COUNTY (KYTX) -- DPS has confirmed that Highway 79 has now reopened.

The man injured in the wreck remains in critical condition. His name has not been released.


 

CHEROKEE COUNTY (KYTX) -- A major head-on collision on Highway 79 at the Neches River Bridge near the Anderson / Cherokee County line has caused the closure of the highway.

DPS and Cherokee County officials say that the bridge is damaged, and will not reopen until at least Tuesday evening -- at the earliest.

You're advised to take an alternate route, if possible, until at least noon on Wednesday. Traffic is being diverted to FM 747 south to Highway 84 on the Cherokee County side.

The head-on collision was between a passenger vehicle and an 18-wheeler. The 18-wheeler was carrying a heavy load. There is no word on the condition of the driver.

The driver of the passenger vehicle has been taken to an area hospital. That person's condition is not known. There were no passengers in the vehilce.
