Javelinas survive shaky start against A&M-Commerce
KINGSVILLE (Kiii Sports) - The Javelinas were able to overcome a 100 yard interception return touchdown from Texas A&M-Commerce and put up over 500 yards of offense in a 39-21 win over the Lions.
A&M-Kingsville got on the board first when Nate Poppell hit Sherman Batiste for an 80 yard touchdown. Poppell hit Batiste in stride and the junior receiver did the rest to give the Javelinas the 6-0 lead. The extra point was blocked however, keeping the lead at six.
Later in the 1st, Poppell was picked off in the redzone by the Lions' Cory Whitfield who took it 100 yards back for the score to give A&M-Commerce the 7-6 lead.
The Javelinas had a little luck of their own however as a botched snap on a field goal lead to a touchdown by Kingsville's Joseph Vela to make it 13-7. The Javs never lost the lead again, with Robert Armstrong having a career day with 10 catches for 175 yards and a touchdown.
With the win, A&M-Kingsville improves to 3-2 on the year as they host non-conference foe Lindenwood next Saturday night.
