New Statue at Texas State Aquarium

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

There's a new bald eagle at the Texas State Aquarium, but this one you don't have to feed.

The new addition to the tourist attraction might look familiar.  In fact, it used to sit in front of Whataburger Headquarters.

Since those folks moved out, the statue, created by world renowned wildlife artist Kent Ullberg, needed a new home.  The Dobson family of Whataburger thought there'd be no better place than the Texas State Aquarium, to show it off.

"It's just a wonderful edition to our waterfront plaza, we already have two.  We are creating a sculpture garden, all focused on wildlife.  Animals you see here in the Texas area.  So it's a great way to tie into our educational message," says TSA President and CEO, Tom Schmid.

"I have two other sculpture here, but this one, this one is so iconic, because this is our national symbol and it means a lot to me.  I'm an immigrant and nationalized American, so bald eagle has been special subject for me," says Ullberg.

Ullberg has called Corpus Christi home for more than 30 years.  He created the bronze statue back in 1985 based on an eagle he saw in Alaska, in the early morning, stretching his wings.
