Former NBA coach Van Gundy speaks at Islanders' fundraiser

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - Former Houston Rockets and New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy was on hand Thursday to speak at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic fundraiser.

Van Gundy is good friends with men's basketball coach Willis Wilson. The two met while Van Gundy was in Houston and Wilson was in the middle of his 16 year coaching stint at Rice. The two had nothing but praise for the other, both saying their coaching counterpart does things the right way.

    Kingsville's Donny Diaz walked away the winner of the first ever John Paul Barta Home run Derby, and thus a $1,000 scholarship.The contest was held at Flour Bluff High School and was named after the former Hornets' player John Paul Barta, who was killed in action overseas in Iraq in 2006.     The red-hot Corpus Christi Hooks stayed that way with a dramatic walk-off win over Tulsa on Monday night. The 6-5 victory completed a sweep of the Drillers and Springfield as part of a 6-0 home stand at Whataburger Field. The Hooks trailed 4-0 before Ruben Sosa clubbed a 3-run home run to cap a 5-run bottom of the 5th inning. Corpus Christi's 5-4 lead lasted until the top of the 9th, when Jared Simon tied the game at 5-5 with a solo home run off of Chris Devenski.More >>
