Islanders avoid sweep with Sunday win

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (Islanders Sports Information) - The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi baseball team came through with big hits in support of another gem by starting pitcher Daniel Minor on Sunday, with the Islanders taking a 6-1 final over Stephen F. Austin to salvage the final game of the Southland Conference series.

The Islanders improved to 16-24 overall, 9-12 in league games, while SFA fell to the same record, 16-24 on the season, 9-12 in Southland contests. Minor pitched his third complete game of the season, giving up just one run on eight hits while striking out nine and walking three. It is the seventh time in 10 starts this year that Minor has struck out eight or more batters in a game, and he improved to 7-1 on the season.

Drew Vest, Brad Porras and Weston Montgomery each came through with two hits for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, while Montgomery led the team with two RBI. Jordan Lee hit his first career home run for his only hit and RBI of the day, while Eric Weiss and Stafford Brantley had one hit apiece. Brantley, Vest and Weiss also had one RBI each.

The Islanders got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning, as Porras led off with a double to left, and moved to third on a bunt single by Montgomery. After Montgomery was thrown out trying to steal, and Lee grounded out to first without the runner scoring, it looked like the Islanders might be kept off the board. That was not to be however, as Vest singled up the middle to bring Porras home and make it a 1-0 game.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi added four runs in the sixth inning, with Jonathan Gonzales reaching and moving to second on an error by the left fielder to begin the rally. Weiss followed with a double to plate Gonzales, and then Brantley doubled off the first baseman with a hot shot down the line to bring Weiss home for a 3-0 score.

After a Jeramie Marek walk and a Porras hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Montgomery singled home both Brantley and Marek to make it a 5-0 lead.

The final run for the Islanders came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Lee became the first player from any team this season to hit a home run at Chapman Field. Lee led off the inning with a solo shot down the right field line to make it a 6-0 game.

SFA scored their only run in the top of the eighth as they recorded three hits to plate the single run. The inning was cut short when Vest made a spectacular diving stop and started the double play from the ground to end the inning.

Next up for the Islanders will be a game on Thursday, April 26, in Victoria against Houston – Victoria. The Islanders will play a single game there on Thursday before heading to Huntsville to take on league-leading Sam Houston State on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
