Hooks thump Arkansas again 13-4

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC HOOKS) - Ryan McCurdy and Jon Singleton homered and drove in four runs each as Corpus Christi cruised past Arkansas 13-4 Thursday night at Whataburger Field before 5,614.

The Hooks are 21-25 and have won three straight. Arkansas slips to 19-27.

McCurdy's first professional homer - a grand slam - punctuated Corpus Christi's nine-run third. Singleton finished with four hits.

Arkansas' 2-3-4 hitters - Renny Osuna, Casey Haerther and Roberto Lopez - pushed one-out singles into right field to set the stage for the game's first run. It crossed the plate when Jarred Cosart struck Carlos Ramirez with a 97-mile per hour fastball.

Jacob Goebbert's two-out RBI double capped a three-run first for the Hooks. Singleton extended his hitting streak to eight games with an RBI single and Brandon Barnes lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Travelers immediately equalized. Consecutive one-out doubles from Jimmy Swift and Rian Kiniry produced their second run before Osuna's sacrifice fly scored Kiniry to make it 3-3.

It wasn't that way for long. An inning later, McCurdy blasted Corpus Christi's first bases-loaded round-tripper of 2012, providing a five-run cushion for Cosart at 8-3. Jose Martinez' double to left began the home third and Singleton provided another RBI hit.

The Hooks continued to feast on Arkansas starter Eddie McKiernan (3-3). Martinez lashed a two-run double and Singleton blasted his sixth home run - a two-run shot - into the visitors' bullpen. McKiernan was pulled before he could finish Corpus Christi's most productive inning of the season after 12 runs (9 earned), 11 hits, a walk and three strikeouts.

The Hooks' nine-run outburst tied a franchise record and was more than enough support for Cosart (3-2), who worked seven frames. He permitted 12 hits, four runs, two walks and struck out six.

Martinez, who added a solo bomb to left in the eighth off Christian Scholl, has hit safely in eight straight.

Corpus Christi's Ross Seaton (3-3) takes the ball Friday at 7:05 against A.J. Schugel (2-4). Fans enjoy Friday Fireworks postgame, presented by Bud Light.
