A&M-CC Breaks Ground on New Track & Soccer Facilities

Posted: Updated:

Corpus Christi (Kiii Sports) - Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi celebrated the groundbreaking of its new soccer & track stadium today (Friday, May 25) at the Momentum Campus on Nile Drive near the Ennis Joslin intersection.

During the ceremony, University President Flavius Killebrew presented Dr. Jack T. Dugan as the donor whose generosity has made the stadium possible. Dr. Killebrew has recommended to The Texas A&M System Board of Regents that the new facility be named the "Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium."

"Dr. Dugan has been a great supporter of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for many years," said Killebrew. "He is once again showing his unwavering support for the University through his philanthropic gift for this stadium."

Killebrew added that the new addition to the expanding athletics complex will be a top-notch collegiate facility capable of hosting national and international events, which will not only benefit the University, but also the City of Corpus Christi.

"Being a physician and former athlete, I know the importance of having the proper facilities for athletes," said Dugan. "It is my hope that the young athletes who use this stadium will develop their skills until they are as sharp and fine as they are capable of becoming."

The approximately $8.8 million facility will be home to the Islanders track team and the newly-established Islanders women's soccer program. When it is completed in May 2013, the 15,300-square foot facility, which features a soccer field enclosed by an eight-lane track, will host Southland Conference competitions as well as non-conference games and tournaments featuring nationally-prominent programs from across the country. There will also be seating for up to 1,000 spectators, concessions, a press box, private suites, locker rooms, training rooms, storage, a ticket office, coaching offices, and a paved parking lot.

Dugan has honored the memory of his late wife, Susan Dugan, through a scholarship endowment and providing the lead gift to build the Dugan Wellness Center on the main University campus.

All eyes were on Mark Appel Wednesday night at Whataburger Field. After all, the Houston Astros’ top pitching prospect was making his Texas League debut. But James Needy, Frank Garces and R.J. Alvarez teamed on a no-hitter as San Antonio blanked Corpus Christi 6-0 before 5,249. Needy (8-3) struck out seven against no walks in a seven-inning, 91-pitch outing. The only Corpus Christi base runner to achieve first was Rene Garcia, who reached on shortstop Diego Goris’ throwing error in the sixth...More >>
