Carroll takes opener over Alexander down in Laredo

Posted: Updated:

Laredo (Kiii Sports)- The Carroll Tigers took advantage of a flurry of Laredo Alexander fielding miscues in route to a 6-1 win at windy, dusty Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo.

Carroll starting pitcher Courtney Hawkins gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st inning, then mowed down Alexander hitters the rest of the evening. Hawkins struck out the side in the 2nd and 3rd innings and finished with 9 punch outs in 6 innings of work.

Both Hawkins and catcher Michael Cantu reached base four times as Carroll kept runners on base all night against Alexander.

Game 2 of the series is set for 5pm Friday night at Whataburger Field. Should the Tigers lose, then Carroll and Alexander will play the 3rd game of the series, beginning 45 minutes after the conclusion of game 2.

A game-winning home run Sunday at Whataburger Field would have kept the night's theme intact. Instead, it was the longest possible single by designated hitter Telvin Nash that made the difference in Corpus Christi's 5-4 triumph in over Arkansas in 10 innings. Nash took a 3-1 Jairo Diaz pitch deep to right-center field off the wall's yellow line, scoring Tony Kemp from third and giving the Hooks their fifth straight victory. It was Corpus Christi's Texas League-best 10th win in 14 extra-inni...More >>
