Bee County Cotton Seed Mill Looking to Hire

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii NEWS) In Bee County, there is a unique mill in the small community of Tynan that is looking to hire and we got a tour of that facility.

When you walk into the BCCA Mill and Cube, it smells like burnt popcorn.  The technology is not new, but it is a unique process for this area.

Rather than using chemical extraction, this plant mechanically extracts the cotton seed oil using old presses from the 1930's.

They plan on hiring between six to eight more people to work at the plant.

Ben Menger said, "Cotton seed has 18 percent oil, and we'll be able to extract 10 percent out of it, so we're gonna have ten percent oil, and then 90 percent meal. The oil is valuable for cooking purposes, but what we're doing is it'll be crude cotton seed oil so we'll be selling it to refineries to make it edible."

The people that run the plant say it will give cotton gins in the area a place to go with their cotton seed, rather than having to ship it away.
