Wyatt Mathisen Drafted By Pirates

Posted: Updated:

Corpus Christi (Kiii Sports) - Calallen's jack-of-all trades, Wyatt Mathisen, was taken by Pittsburgh in the 2nd Round of the MLB draft on Tuesday.

Mathisen pitched, caught, and played shortstop for the Wildcats during his senior year, but it's his work behind the plate that appears to be his ticket to pro baseball.

The Pirates have the .440 hitter penciled in as a catcher. Several scouting services had him listed as the top high school catching prospect in the draft.

Should Wyatt turn down the Pirates, and that does not appear to be likely, he has already signed a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Texas.

Other local players taken in the second day of the draft included former Calallen pitcher Jordan John, by the Tigers in Round 6. He is still Oklahoma closer as the Sooners compete in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Pitcher Daniel Minor became the highest-drafted A&M-CC player in history as he was taken in Round 9 by the Astros. Sinton grad Anthony Banda, who played this year at San Jacinto JC, was taken by the Brewers in Round 10 of the draft.
