Rip Tides Result in Drowning at Packery Channel

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A man went for a swim at the Packery Channel, and apparently got caught up in the rip currents late Thursday afternoon.

The man was reported to be in trouble around 3 p.m. Rescue crews jumped into action, but it appears it may have been too late.

"The lifeguard was out there trying to pull him in, and I saw he was struggling," said Nelda Jasso, a witness who helped in the rescue effort. "I took my shoes off, I had my running shoes on because I was running. So I ran out there and helped him drag him in to shore."

The incident took place near the south jetty of the Packery Channel. The witness told police the 28-year old man was swimming with his wife when he began to struggle in the water. A lifeguard swam out to the man and brought him to shore.

"The lifeguards, paramedics, you know, they preformed CPR," Jasso said. "They put the AED on him. Did everything they could until the rescue unit got here. Once the rescue unit got here they took him."

Rescue workers were unable to resuscitate the man on the beach. He was transported to Bay Area Hospital. His condition is unknown.
