More than $90,000 were handed out Monday to a handful of local groups on the front lines in the fight against diabetes.
The Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative proudly gave away grant money to eight deserving organizations that are doing their best to either raise awareness, educate or prevent diabetes in the community.
One of those recipients was the Junior League of Corpus Christi and their "Kids in the Kitchen" program. The program educates children about healthy eating.
"Our grant is $6,000, and that will add to the money that we already have set up for Kids in the Kitchen," said Katherine Dain, current president of the Junior League of Corpus Christi. "So we are really excited to do more things that we had already planned on."
The Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative is made of medical professionals, community leaders and local industry. Since its inception in 2007, they have given away more than $800,000 in grants to projects in the Corpus Christi area.
