Camp Sandcastle is a week-long program held in Rockport that is aimed at helping young type-one diabetics and their siblings to better understand and manage the disease.
The camp is staffed by doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, and the idea is to show children that even though they have type-one diabetes, with good management of the disease they can still have a full and active life.
"People with diabetes need to know they are not the only one out there," said Will Smith, an 11-year old from Rockport Fulton Middle School. "It's cool to come and fit in, and feel normal and still have fun at the same time."
The camp, which is free to attend thanks to sponsors, is in its twentieth year. For more information about signing a child up for Camp Sandcastle, visit their Web site at www.diabetes.org.
