Lightning Strikes Church Steeple at Naval Air Station

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

They say lightning doesn't strike the same place twice, but try telling that to the Naval Air Station Chaplain.

About a year and a half ago, the chapel there lost its organ due to a lightning strike. On Thursday morning, lightning struck again, this time knocking off the very top of the chapel's cross.

The lightning strike happened at around 8:30 a.m., about half an hour before Vacation Bible School was to begin at the church. It was all song and dance inside the chapel a few hours later, as the lightning strike did not stop the weekly Vacation Bible School from continuing.

A lot of the youth workers were in the fellowship hall next door, having their breakfast at the time. A couple of people were actually going into the building when they heard a very loud boom, and pieces of debris began to fall. That's when they saw that lightning had struck the top of the chapel, doing damage to the steeple and to the cross on top.

"Some people were looking at it like, is this a bad omen type thing?" said Lt. Stephen Warne, staff chaplain at the Naval Air Station. "But you know, we're at Vacation Bible School, and the theme is amazing wonders, awesome power. So I just look at it as, hey, this is a great illustration for the kids about how awesome power can be."

The chaplain said that after the strike, a lot of wooden pieces of debris with nails in them were stuck in the ground, but youth workers picked them up. The lightning strike somehow turned the sprinkler system on, and unfortunately damaged the house sound system, so the church will have to improvise with make shift microphones for this Sunday's service.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.
