Land Exchange Between TAMUK and Local Diocese Finalized

Posted: Updated:
KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) -

Monday was one of the greatest days in the history of Texas A&M University - Kingsville; at least, that's what the university president is calling it.

The excitement is over a partnership between the University and the Diocese of Corpus Christi. The two came together Monday to sign a historic land-exchange agreement. The deals clears the way for the construction of a student center, a chapel and student housing close to campus.

At Monday's signing ceremony, Bishop Michael Mulvey joked that he hadn't read the agreement after he signed it to finalize the deal. Under the agreement, the university will exchange about five acres of land with the diocese and in return, the university will take over the St. Thomas Aquinas property.

"It's going to be like a complex on that five acres, on that part of campus, so we're just really excited about it," Bishop Mulvey said. "It's something new, that only a few other public campuses around the country have had."

"This gives students an additional opportunity," TAMUK President Dr. Steven Tallant said. "A spiritual opportunity center where they can live together, grow together, study together; and it's something that you very seldom see in a public university, so this really is breaking ground, and I believe a wonderful day in the history of the Javelina Nation."

Bishop Mulvey said he realized the current Catholic Center was too small, and he wanted to keep up with the advances the university was making on the campus.

Construction will begin in October, and the facilities will open in the fall of next year.
