Study Recommends Low-Glycemic Diet to Lose Weight, Keep It Off

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Losing weight is hard enough, but keeping it off can be even tougher. A new study examines three kinds of diet and their effects.

According to Dr. Timothy Johnson, only one in six overweight adults in the US reports maintaining significant weight loss for more than one year. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association looked at ways of keeping weight off. They examined three diets: low-fat, low-carb and low-glycemic, which aims to keep blood-sugar levels stable.

Though not as strict as a low-carb diet, it centers on protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. The authors found that test subjects burned more "resting calories," the kind you burn just sitting down, when they were on the low-carb or low- glycemic diets. The low-carb diet burned the most overall calories, but increased blood markers for stress and inflammation.

So the authors recommend the low-glycemic diet for the same calorie-burning benefits of low-carb without the potentially negative effects.
