San Diego House Fire Under Investigation

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (Kiii News) -

Fire investigators in San Diego are still trying to figure out what caused a fire that gutted a rental home that housed a family of five.

"Soon as we turned the corner to park in the driveway, we noticed smoke coming out of the house, and then all of a sudden flames just started rushing out of the place," said Jose Martinez, a neighbor. "Then the fire department showed up."

Martinez was coming back to his home when he saw his neighbor's house on fire. It happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of Bonita Street. The family living there was said to be in the process of moving out and wasn't home at the time.

Investigators believe the cause is a faulty air conditioning unit, but the state fire marshall has been called in to look over the evidence.

Meanwhile, the American Red Cross has stepped in and put the family up in a motel for the night, and provided some food and clothing.
