Tip Leads to Large Marijuana Bust in Duval County

DUVAL COUNTY (Kiii News) -

A tip from a motorist led to a sizeable drug seizure in Duval County Tuesdaymorning.

Seven large bundles of marijuana, weighing a total of 352 pounds, werediscovered inside of a sport utility vehicle on FM 2295 in Benavides, TX.

A motorist reported multiple vehicles traveling close together at around 9a.m. They said it looked suspicious, and appeared as if the vehicles had justpicked up illegal immigrants.

Agent Randy Trigo, of the Central South Texas Criminal Investigations Unit,responded to the call. When he found vehicles matching the description, theysplit up. He pursued one of them, a Ford Expedition, down a dead-end road. Theoccupants of the SUV bailed and fled into the brush.

When Trigo inspected the vehicle, he found seven large bundles of marijuana.They were wrapped in rope and towing strap, and it is suspected that illegalimmigrants backpacked the bundles through the brush to get past United StatesBorder Patrol checkpoints.

Investigators believe the drugs were destined for Houston, where the vehiclehad been purchased and registered. The Border Patrol was called in to searchfor the individuals who fled from the scene, but none have been located so far.

A similar incident happened in Duval County on Thursday, June 28, leading to
a seizure of more than 318 pounds of marijuana and six arrests, for chargesincluding possession of marijuana, engaging in organized criminal activity andeven human trafficking.
